In Awaso in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai district of the Northern western region, the workers of Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC) Limited feel uneasy and fearful of unemployment.
In an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi about Peace FM’s "Kokrokoo" plan, Samson K. Nyamekye, Peace FM’s Ashanti regional correspondent, said that the workers’ concerns are based on the Chinese investor Bosai Minerals Group. The decision to withdraw due to the non-renewal of its mining lease, which will expire in less than six months.
Bosai Minerals owns 80% of the company's shares, while Ghana Comprehensive Aluminum Corporation, which represents the government, owns 20%.
According to Samson K. Nyamekye, since Bosai is a joint venture, Bosai has written to the government regarding its decision to sell shares.
"If this happens, more than 700 workers will lose their jobs," he added.
