President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced that Samuel Takyi, a bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will receive a car, $10,000 in cash for his efforts in the Olympics, and another $20,000 will be invested in his future fund.
The news was announced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday, August 20, 2021, when he visited him at the Jubilee House.
In addition, each member of the Ghanaian task force consisting of 14 athletes will also receive a prize of US$5,000 for their efforts in the competition.
The President also awarded medals to all athletes and officials participating in the competition in recognition of their performance in the competition.
President Akufo-Addo announced that the government will spend a total of US$150,000 to provide bonuses for Ghanaian athletes at the Tokyo Olympics.
"Ghanaian athlete Samuel Taki was selected to represent Africa at the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Ghana won a medal at the Olympics for the first time in the history of the Fourth Republic."
"Ghana ranks 10th among the 52 African countries participating in the Olympic Games.
This should inspire us to a higher level in future games. On behalf of the people of Ghana, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you. You make this country proud," President Akufo-Addo said.
Taki’s bronze medal in a lightweight boxing competition is the country’s first medal since 1992, as it ended 49 years of waiting for individual medals in multiple sporting events.
The Ghanaian 4x100-meter relay team also set a national record for booking a place in the final of the event, and Joseph Paul Amoah ran the fastest 200-meter time among all Ghanaian athletes in the race.
